Chapter Fifteen

Leonardo

Wide awake in the wee hours of the morning isn’t an unusual occurrence for me. Lily is snuggled into my side with the top of her head framed by my arm. A conversation from my past is replaying in my mind in addition to snippets from a conversation earlier today.

“Leo, how are you truly?” Papa asked.

“Physically, I feel fine. My new injury was to a different part of my brain. Repairing my bar is going to take some time.” I purposefully left out the part where Danica, or whatever her name is, duped me. The extent of her scheme is still unknown.

“And my piccola?”

I was silent for a few moments.

He continued, “Do you recall a conversation we had about Lilianna soon before the draft?”

“Yes, sir. I asked for your permission to date Lily.”

Papa clasped his finger in front of him on the desk. “Yet you never asked her. Why?”

Lily already knows I shelved my romantic feelings and why. Sharing with Papa wasn’t a betrayal. I settled my nerves and explained my reasoning for not chasing Lily back then—the risk of losing her family after losing all I had left of my own.

Papa is a thoughtful, careful man. “I see, and now?”

“When I shared with Lily, she made me see if she and I didn’t make it, you, Mama, and the rest of the family would never cast me aside. However, her selflessness, she also saw what losing the only family I had left would do to me. Lily is an amazing woman, and we decided to be a couple now.”

“Lilianna is wise beyond her years, always has been. You came into our family when you were eight years old. Rosalie and I will always have a seat for you at our table.”

“Thank you, sir. When the time comes, I would…. I assure you, it won’t take a decade this time.” I inhale sharply. “Sir, I would appreciate your blessing to marry your daughter.”

Papa grinned. “Which one?”

I laughed.

“You have my blessing to marry Lilianna, if she’ll have you.”

“Thank you. We should get out of here before they ask questions,” I offered.

“Too late. Both Rosalie and Lilianna are detectives and quite perceptive.”

I smirked. “Truer words.” We exited his office to the kitchen.

Lily stirs beside me, pulling me out of my thoughts. “Morning, Stella.”

She presses a kiss to the side of my chest. “Morning. How early is it?”

“A little before six.”

“Want to take a walk with me and Lola before I clock in?” Lily pushes up to sitting.

“Sure. What time is your call with your boss?”

“The call is at ten. Then we have your appointment with the building inspector, fire marshal, and Scott, right?”

“Yeah. Are you sure you should be skipping out on work given their request? I understand if you can’t come with me.”

“I’ll share with you what I’m thinking while we walk.”

I nod, and she’s on her feet.

Within fifteen minutes, we’re strolling down her driveway with Lola scampering a bit ahead at the end of her teal leash. Lola is part Cavalier spaniel and part poodle.
